 2. Plot

The film opens in 1947, with banker Andy Dufresne being condemned of  boggling his  woman and her  nut. Despite his innocence, Andy is given two life  rulings and  transferred to Shawshank State Penitentiary. Life in Shawshank is brutal, with Andy facing harsh conditions and violent attacks, particularly from a gang known as" The Sisters."

Andy befriends Ellis" Red" Redding, a longtime capture known for smuggling contraband. Over time, Andy earns the trust of the captivity staff by offering  fiscal advice, including helping the  loose Warden Samuel Norton( Bob Gunton) with  plutocrat laundering schemes. His chops  ultimately lead to  bettered conditions for the convicts, including the establishment of a captivity library.

One of the film’s most poignant moments occurs when Andy plays an  pieces record over the captivity's public address system, giving the convicts a  detail, beautiful escape from their grim reality. His  conduct earn him two weeks in solitary confinement, but his spirit remains unbroken.

A major turning point comes when a new capture, Tommy Williams( Gil Bellows), reveals that he  formerly met a man who admitted to committing the murders for which Andy was condemned. Andy approaches the warden with this information, but Norton,  stewing the loss of his  fiscal schemes, dismisses it and has Tommy killed. Andy realizes that Norton will  noway  let him go, and he becomes visibly despairing.

still, Andy’s  address changes suddenly. He asks Red for a length of rope, raising  reservations that he might be suicidal. rather, Andy executes a strictly planned escape. He coverts through the wall of his cell over the course of 19 times, using a  gemstone hammer hidden behind a bill of Rita Hayworth(  latterly replaced with bills of Marilyn Monroe and Raquel Welch). He crawls through a sewage pipe to freedom, arising into the rain with a newfound sense of emancipation.

The coming morning, Andy's absence is discovered. By the time the warden and guards understand what  happed, Andy has  formerly exposed the corruption within Shawshank. He sends  substantiation of the warden's  fiscal crimes to the authorities, leading to Norton's  self-murder to avoid arrest.

Following Andy’s escape, Red falls into despair, believing he'll  noway  be free. still, he's  ultimately granted parole and struggles to acclimate to life outside captivity. Flashing back Andy’s advice, Red travels to a specific hayfield in Buxton, Maine, where he finds a  retired cache with  plutocrat and a letter from Andy. The letter invites Red to join him in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
