The  script was written by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman, with Will Smith starring as the  supereminent character, Dr. Robert Neville.

2. Plot Summary

Set in 2012, I Am Legend follows Dr. Robert Neville, a brilliant virologist who appears to be the last  mortal survivor in New York City after a deadly contagion, firstly developed to cure cancer, turns  utmost of the population into hostile, light-sensitive mutants known as" Darkseekers." Neville, who's vulnerable to the contagion, dedicates his life to chancing  a cure while broadcasting  dispatches for any other survivors.

By day, he roams the abandoned  megacity, gathering  inventories and conducting  trials in his fortified home. By night, he  fences himself against the Darkseekers, who quest in packs. His only companion is his  pious German Cowgirl, Sam.

One day, Neville sets a trap for a Darkseeker to capture and experiment on. latterly, the  brutes use  analogous tactics to trap him, showing signs of intelligence. As his  internal state deteriorates due to  insulation and grief, tragedy strikes when Sam is infected, forcing Neville to euthanize her.

Just as Neville reaches his  smallest point,  meaning  self-murder, he's  saved by Anna and her  youthful companion Ethan, who claim to be on their way to a survivor colony in Vermont. still, the Darkseekers track them to his home, leading to a final  battle. Neville discovers that his experimental cure works but realizes there's no time to mass- produce it. In the theatrical ending, Neville  offerings himself by blowing up his lab along with the attacking Darkseekers,  icing Anna and Ethan escape with the cure.

3. Alternate Ending

A different ending,  near to Matheson’s novel, was  latterly revealed in the DVD release. In this  interpretation, Neville realizes that the Darkseekers are n't careless monsters but have  feelings and intelligence. He returns the  interned  womanish Darkseeker to her mate, and the  brutes leave without attacking. Neville  also departs with Anna and Ethan to find the survivor colony.

4. Themes and Analysis

Survival and insulation The film explores the cerebral  goods of extreme loneliness and the lengths one will go to survive in a world devoid of  mortal  fellowship. Neville's routine,  exchanges with mannequins, and his relationship with Sam illustrate his  hopeless attempts to maintain  reason.

Science and Ethics Neville represents both the  pledge and implicit  troubles of scientific advancements. The contagion,  originally a medical advance, becomes a catastrophe, raising questions about the unintended consequences of tampering with nature.

Humanity vs. Monsters The movie challenges the notion of what it means to be  mortal. In the alternate ending, Neville realizes that he's the true monster in the eyes of the Darkseekers, as he has been experimenting on and killing their kind.

Faith and Redemption Anna’s belief in God and the actuality of a survivor colony contrasts with Neville’s  original  dubitation. His eventual  tone- immolation( or decision to leave in the alternate ending) represents his redemption and stopgap for humanity’s future.

5. Conclusion

I Am Legend is a grippingpost - apocalyptic  suspenser that combines action, horror, and emotional depth. Will Smith’s performance as Robert Neville carries the film, making it a  important  disquisition of  insulation, adaptability, and the ethics of survival.

While the theatrical ending delivers a dramatic, heroic immolation, the alternate ending presents a  further  study- provoking resolution that questions the nature of the infected and Neville’s own  part in the conflict.

Despite some  diversions from the original novel, the film remains one of the most  poignant dystopian stories of  ultramodern cinema.
